It’s not as difficult as you might think to select a good design firm if you make your needs clear, are not afraid to ask questions, and follow a few basic guidelines.
- Plan ahead before you start contacting potential designers; think about what you need and want. Look around the Web or in magazines and make notes about what you like or dislike; colors, styles, graphics, fonts, animations, navigation. You may not be an expert in graphic design, but you ARE an expert in your business: you will ultimately judge the quality of your project by the same criteria you use to evaluate your other business relationships. - Make sure that the designer is competent in all aspects of the relevant technologies: many people have quickly learned the basic skills required to create and publish rudimentary graphics and web pages. However, if your design firm is not skilled in both graphic design and computer programming along with a high degree of Internet savvy and artistic ability, you will be short changed and disappointed in the long run.
- If the design firm you select does not listen, get another one! Your investment in this medium is too important for you to put up with prima donna artists or unprofessional hobbyists.
